What can Hull learn from 'the most radical city on Earth'?
Cooperation Jackson is a radical movement based in Jackson, the state capital of Mississipi. They advocate for "economic democracy": decent pay and conditions for workers, and the right of all people to shape the economic conditions that influence their lives — like how their city prioritises spending — through a People's Assembly.
Alongside Rojava, Cooperation Jackson is a key inspiration for us, and our name pays respect to their pioneering work.
Cooperation Jackson helped elect long-time civil rights activist Chokwe Antwar Lumumba as the city's mayor, who won with a landslide 92% of the vote! He won by promising to ‘make Jackson the most radical city on the planet’, and to enact the will of the People’s Assembly. This proved that you don’t need to compromise on your principles or your vision to make real change happen.
Cooperation Jackson consists of:
a federation of local worker cooperatives,
a cooperative incubator,
a cooperative education and training center,
and a cooperative bank.
Here in Hull:
The city already has fantastic worker’s cooperatives, like Hull Delivery Coop.
We helped ecological gardening coop The People’s Land Cooperative to incorporate.
We set up Hull’s radical library, Cooperation Books, at Lonsdale Community Centre.
Our plan is to establish Neighbourhood Assemblies in every postcode — places where people can come together to imagine a better world, and organise Mutual Aid projects to make it a reality.
We are also working to establish a city-wide Hull People’s Assembly, which would collaborate with worker’s cooperatives to make Hull the most radical city in these Isles.
We need 2,000 people to sign the pledge to support the Hull People’s Assembly. Help us build real democracy by adding your name today.
